It's not unusual for a popular classic drum kit to be reissued. With the rejuvenated Broadkaster series, however, Gretsch has really pulled out all the stops. Part of the series is the BK-J403-SCP, a three-piece shell set with a classic-looking Satin Copper Mist finish. Featuring a 20-inch bass drum, a 12-inch tom and a 14-inch floor tom, the configuration is referred to by Gretsch as a Classic Jazz Kit. The sizes of the shells allow for a wide tuning range, making them suitable for nearly any type of music.

Optimal resonance

The three-ply shells of the BK-J403-SCP set are quite thin. They are made of two plies of maple with a single ply of poplar in between and have a standard silver coating on the inside. The chosen wood types of the thin shells allow for a quick transfer of energy from the Remo drumheads to the shells, ensuring optimal resonance and a full sound with a well-defined low end. The BK-J403-SCP kit is equipped with modern Standard Build hardware. The tom is able to resonate freely as its suspended from its hoop by means of the Gretsch Tom Mounting System (GTS), and the bass drum and floor tom legs are also products of modern technology. Thanks to the inclusion of rugged tension rods, the set is able to perform under pressure.

Bearing edges and hoops

The bearing edges of the bass drum and toms have been finished by hand. Their 30-degree reverse roundover edges increase the surface contact between shell and drumhead, guaranteeing a full sound. The steel hoops are double-flanged, just like they used to be in the 1950s, but made of a more rugged material. As a beautiful finishing touch, the matching wooden hoops of the bass drum have been fitted with decorative chrome inlays.
