Allmänt
After the M1, the WaveStation, the 01/W and the Trinity, Korg has issued another gem. The Korg Kross-61 is an exceptionally practical and user-friendly synthesizer that offers more functionality than you'd expect at first glance. Many large-segment synths are particularly suitable for studio applications, but the Kross-61 is great for performances, thanks to its low weight and exceptional portability. If you like, you can even power the synth by means of 6 AA batteries.
The sound
The most important characteristic of a synthesizer is, of course, its sound. This black-and-red Korg certainly packs the goods in that department. The pianos, E-pianos and drums of the Kross are particularly good and stem from Korg top models that are used on a daily basis by professionals. The grand piano, for instance, features accurately sampled decays that have been recorded in three different velocity levels. The sounds of the Korg SG-1D and previously mentioned Korg M1 are also represented. Naturally, a wide range of organs, strings, brass instruments, accordions, chimes and synths are also at your disposal, ready for you to use as you explore a variety of musical genres. For a lightweight and portable instrument like the Kross, the sound quality is surprisingly good - Korg have efficiently used the 112MB ROM of this PCM synth.
Other characteristics
Operating the Kross-61 is easy: select a category (strings, for instance) with one knob and then select the desired sound from that category with another knob. Your favourite sounds (and your own patches) can be stored in a bank of 64. The Korg synth has no fewer than seven effects for you to choose from: five inserts and two masters. In addition to traditional effects like reverb, delay and chorus, less conventional ones like amp modelling and vocoder are also at your disposal. The mention of the word vocoder already gave it away - the Kross-61 is equipped with a microphone input. An audio recorder is also present, as well as an SD card slot for your recordings. Korg have equipped the Kross-61 synthesizer with a step sequencer too (the same as the Korg Electribe), while an arpeggiator completes the picture.
