This white Sony XDR-S40DBP digital radio brings you the future of radio: DAB+! DAB+, which stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting+, is the successor of DAB and the new standard for radio transmission. As a digital counterpart for the analogue FM, it offers crystal-clear sound and is less prone to interference. And what's more, this digital alternative offers space for more stations. Of course FM radio stations are also still available, thanks to the inclusion of a rod antenna. The XDR-S40DBP is a pleasant, mobile digital radio that can either be connected to the mains power, or powered by four (rechargeable) AA batteries. As such, you can take this lightweight radio with you and use it anywhere you go.

Characteristics and functionality

Sony's XDR-S40DBP is equipped with a single speaker with a 0.3-inch/0.66cm diameter and a power of 0.3 watt, which means it produces mono sound. Connect a pair of headphones to the 3.5mm jack output, however, and you can also enjoy your favourite radio stations in stereo. The front panel of the digital radio is fitted with controls for various functions (such as the presets), a menu button and a DAB+/FM selection button. A large volume knob is located on the side, while an orange LCD display provides you with the necessary information, such as radio stations, DAB+ or FM, station presets, battery status, and so on.

DAB+

DAB+ has replaced the older DAB technology, and may well replace analogue FM technology too. Digital radio has many benefits compared to its analogue counterpart. A single DAB+ frequency can be used to transmit various stations, for instance, so you no longer need to search for specific frequencies. As digital signals take up less space in the ether, more room is available for other stations. DAB+ is used in several countries world-wide, particularly in Europe. In addition to the familiar public broadcasting and commercial stations that could be found via FM, many stations that were previously only available via cable or Internet radio can now also be found in the ether.
