The Valco company, from Chicago, built guitar amplifiers with a low power output. These not only delivered a nice clean sound with edge, but also a tremolo effect driven by tubes. The result was a hypnotic percussive throb that got the creative juices flowing. The Catalinbread Valcoder was designed to recreate the sound of the tube tremolo and vintage tube amp distortion. Thanks to separate input and output controls, you can choose anything from a clean tremolo effect up to a thick muddy sound. This pedal can operate at both 9 V and 18 V. At 18 V the effect is somewhat cleaner thanks to the extra headroom, and the tremolo effect is a bit stronger.
Valcoder: versatile tremolo
The Catalinbread Valcoder has a fully analogue LFO circuit based on the Valco tube tremolo from the '60s. With the Depth and Rate controls set low, you will experience a bubbling modulation that's ideal when playing complex chords. Set both controls to maximum and you'll get a pounding rhythmic sound that gives your overdrive signal a bit of extra power. The Valcoder also has a JFET-based dynamic and responsive audio path that adds light compression to a bit of vintage tube-amp-style edge. With the input and output controls both on maximum, the Valcoder can even be used as a booster of ten decibels. This handy option enriches your sound or can be used to help you cut through the mix.
