Scarlatti VL 1/8 fiol

This is the lovely Scarlatti VL 1/8 violin. We tend to see this size in the hands of children of about 5 years of age; for younger (smaller) children, there is also the 1/10 version available. Scarlatti violins are made completely out of solid wood, with spruce used for the top and maple for the ribs and back. This particular set, including case, bow and fine tuners, is a good choice for parents who want to see if violin is the right instrument for their child.

1/8-size violins

The 1/8 size is suitable for children with an arm length of about 45 cm. The arm length should be measured from the centre of your palm to your neck, right below your jaw. Your hand should be able to comfortably curl around the scroll, with your fingers pointed at your face and your elbow only slightly curved. When in doubt, always go with the smaller of the two sizes. Incidentally, the name '1/8' does not mean that this violin is eight times smaller than a 4/4 full-size violin; the difference is much more subtle.
