There's nothing more rewarding than building your own guitar. Since any DIY project starts with a body that you can fit all other guitar parts to, the first step is to decide what kind of body-shape you want (e.g. ST-style, LP-style, etc). Then, you'll have to decide on the wood, where it might be worth knowing that tonewoods that have a relatively low density such as basswood (linden) and paulownia are easier to work with than high-density wood types. Some pre-shaped guitar bodies feature the required cut-outs (routing) for components like the pickups, pots and the bridge, which is worth remembering if you haven't got a drill. Lastly, there's the choice between a lacquered and an unfinished body. Basically, an unfinished body can serve as a blank canvas, while a finished body lets you skip a painstaking part in the self-build process. That said, no matter which guitar body you're going for, building your own guitar will be an endlessly useful, rewarding and memorable journey.
